Update for 9/17
Dear Parents,
We had an awesome time at Rock Eagle! I hope your students have shared some of the cool things we saw and did. This week in Tiger Time, we will be having our post-assessment on the powers of 10 and getting into our final two math standards (NBT.5 & NBT.6) for Unit 1 with a pre-test on Tuesday. These final two math standards deal with fluently multiplying and dividing multi-digit numbers. In 6.1 math, we will be reviewing our Greatest Common Factor and Least Common Multiple quizzes and then delving into some deeper exploration as well as getting into dividing fractions by other fractions.
In Science, we are finishing up our Classification unit this week by focusing on plant classification and the differences between vascular and nonvascular plants as well as angiosperms and gymnosperms. We will do an investigation of how vascular plants get water and nutrients to the top of the plant and will work with our textbooks, www.quizlet.com, and notes from our class power point to prepare for our plant classification quiz this Friday, 9/22.
Next week (9/25- 9/29) will be the Iowa Test of Basic Skills for 5th grade so please make sure your student is on time having had a good breakfast with protein and plenty of sleep the night before for Monday through Friday. The ITBS is a nationally normed test of what your child learned in 4th grade and where he/she is most and least developed in Reading, L.A., Math, Science, and Social Studies. This is not a week of testing for your student to stress over!
In Reading, we will continue our modeled reading with "Al Capone Shines My Shoes" focusing on how quotes and actions drive the story, comparing characters, and observing the events before the crisis event and after it. In Writing, we will continue our work on our narrative pieces focusing on revising our initial drafts. On Friday, we will begin our Alliance Theater collaboration with our first session with our artist!!
5.1 Math Standards:
MGSE5.NBT.5 Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm (or other strategies demonstrating understanding of multiplication) up to a 3-digit by 2-digit factor.
MGSE5.NBT.6 Fluently divide up to 4-digit dividends and 2-digit divisors by using at least one of the following methods: strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations or concrete models. (e.g., rectangular arrays, area models)
6.1 Math Standards:
MGSE6.NS.1 Interpret and compute quotients of fractions, and solve word problems involving division of fractions by fractions, including reasoning strategies such as using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem.
For example:
How much chocolate will each person get if 3 people share 1/2 lb of chocolate equally?
How many 3/4-cup servings are in 2/3 of a cup of yogurt?
How wide is a rectangular strip of land with length 3/4 mi and area 1/2 square mi?
Three pizzas are cut so each person at the table receives ¼ pizza. How many people are at the table?
Create a story context for (2/3)÷(3/4) and use a visual fraction model to show the quotient;
Science Standards:
S5L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to group organisms using scientific classification procedures.
a. Develop a model that illustrates how animals are sorted into groups (vertebrate and invertebrate) and how vertebrates are sorted into groups (fish, amphibian, reptile, bird, and mammal) using data from multiple sources.
b. Develop a model that illustrates how plants are sorted into groups (seed producers, non-seed producers) using data from multiple sources.

Use the relationship between multiplication and division to explain that (2/3)÷(3/4) = 8/9 because 3/4 of 8/9 is 2/3. (In general, (a/b) ÷ (c/d) = ad/bc)

Reading Standards:
|
ELAGSE5RL1:Quote accurately from a text when explaining what
the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
ELAGSE5RL2: Determine the theme of a story, including how characters respond to
a story; summarize the text
ELAGSE5RL3:
Compare/contrast characters, settings, events in a story drawing on specific
details.

Rock Eagle Update
Our Rock Eagle trip is
still a go and quickly approaching, I wanted to remind
you of a few things:
1. Please have your
students prepared for rain. There are no plans to cancel the
trip unless there is a State
of Emergency declared for the specific county (Putnam County), and, so far, there
has not been one declared. We are on heavy hurricane watch and will keep you
posted every step of the way if this
changes. It is imperative
that students have raincoats, boots, etc. and that they are prepared to walk and
do other activities (canoeing, etc.) outside if it rains.
2. Thank you for all of
those who have sent in s'mores donations. We could still
use about 10 complete
sets (graham crackers, marshmallows, and plain chocolate bars) in order to
ensure that every student is able to have one or (hopefully) two.
In case you're able to send in some smore's donations... :)

3. We will be visiting
the camp canteen which contains souvenirs and candy. This
is usually a highlight for
the entire grade. If you would like your student to be able to purchase
something, please make sure that they have cash.
4. The bus will leave at
approximately 8 am on Thursday September 14 and will
return Friday September
15th at approximately 2 pm. When students arrive they
can go directly to the
gym or to breakfast, then the gym. There is no need for them
to go to their homeroom.
5. The students have been
split into 4 cabins (2 for boys and 2 for girls) and each
cabin will be monitored
by 2 adults per cabin (2 men for the boy's cabins and 2 women for the girl's cabins).
6. The t-shirts are
expected to arrive this week. If they arrive before the trip, we will
distribute them and ask
that the students wear them on Thursday. If they do not arrive, we will pick
another day to have the 5th grade wear them so that we can take a class picture
and your kiddo can just wear a Spirit Day Spalding shirt.
We are excited to accompany the 5th
graders as we journey to Rock Eagle
together!! Please email us with any questions or
concerns.

Tiger Time math related to NBT.1 and NBT.2
MGSE5.NBT.1. Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.
MGSE5.NBT.2 Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.

Update for 9/4
Hello 5th grade parents,
that there are a couple of quizzes coming up this week. We will have a Science quiz on Wednesday, September 6. It will cover Classification (Chapter 6: Sections 1 and 2). The students brought home their Science books and Science journals to study.
Also, we'll have a quiz for our Reading/Literary Centers Period on Friday. This
isn't one for which the students will be able to study any specific text. It will entail them having a "cold read" on a passage and exhibiting that they can do the following: 1. Identify theme 2. Analyze characterization 3. Compare/contrast characters , events, settings 4.Use text-based evidence to answer a question 5. Alter the story in some way that follows a logical sequence with the text.
multiplication up to two-digit by three-digit. For our 5.2/6.1's, it will cover greatest
common factor (GCF) and least common factor (LCM). The students can find
great review at www.studyjams.com.Also, a Sign Up Genius link is below for the collection of our s'mores needs.
Please feel free to check it out and contribute some items for our trip. :)
