Update for 9/17

         Dear Parents,

We had an awesome time at Rock Eagle!  I hope your students have shared some of the cool things we saw and did.  This week in Tiger Time, we will  be having our post-assessment on the powers of 10 and getting into our final two math standards (NBT.5 & NBT.6) for Unit 1 with a pre-test on Tuesday.  These final two math standards deal with fluently multiplying and dividing multi-digit numbers.  In 6.1 math, we will be reviewing our Greatest Common Factor and Least Common Multiple quizzes and then delving into some deeper exploration as well as getting into dividing fractions by other fractions.

In Science, we are finishing up our Classification unit this week by focusing on plant classification and the differences between vascular and nonvascular plants as well as angiosperms and gymnosperms.  We will do an investigation of how vascular plants get water and nutrients to the top of the plant and will work with our textbooks, www.quizlet.com, and notes from our class power point to prepare for our plant classification quiz this Friday, 9/22.

Next week (9/25- 9/29) will be the Iowa Test of Basic Skills for 5th grade so please make sure your student is on time having had a good breakfast with protein and plenty of sleep the night before for Monday through Friday.  The ITBS is a nationally normed test of what your child learned in 4th grade and where he/she is most and least developed in Reading, L.A., Math, Science, and Social Studies.  This is not a week of testing for your student to stress over!

In Reading, we will continue our modeled reading with "Al Capone Shines My Shoes" focusing on how quotes and actions drive the story, comparing characters, and observing the events before the crisis event and after it.  In Writing, we will continue our work on our narrative pieces focusing on revising our initial drafts. On Friday, we will begin our Alliance Theater collaboration with our first session with our artist!!

5.1 Math Standards:

MGSE5.NBT.5 Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm (or other strategies demonstrating understanding of multiplication) up to a 3-digit by 2-digit factor.

MGSE5.NBT.6 Fluently divide up to 4-digit dividends and 2-digit divisors by using at least one of the following methods: strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations or concrete models. (e.g., rectangular arrays, area models)

6.1 Math Standards:

MGSE6.NS.1 Interpret and compute quotients of fractions, and solve word problems involving division of fractions by fractions, including reasoning strategies such as using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem.

For example:
How much chocolate will each person get if 3 people share 1/2 lb of chocolate equally?
How many 3/4-cup servings are in 2/3 of a cup of yogurt?
How wide is a rectangular strip of land with length 3/4 mi and area 1/2 square mi?
Three pizzas are cut so each person at the table receives ¼ pizza. How many people are at the table?
Create a story context for (2/3)÷(3/4) and use a visual fraction model to show the quotient;

Use the relationship between multiplication and division to explain that (2/3)÷(3/4) = 8/9 because 3/4 of 8/9 is 2/3. (In general, (a/b) ÷ (c/d) = ad/bc)

Science Standards:

S5L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to group organisms using scientific classification procedures.

a. Develop a model that illustrates how animals are sorted into groups (vertebrate and invertebrate) and how vertebrates are sorted into groups (fish, amphibian, reptile, bird, and mammal) using data from multiple sources.

b. Develop a model that illustrates how plants are sorted into groups (seed producers, non-seed producers) using data from multiple sources.

Reading Standards:

ELAGSE5RL1:Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
ELAGSE5RL2: Determine the theme of a story, including how characters respond to a story; summarize the text
ELAGSE5RL3: Compare/contrast characters, settings, events in a story drawing on specific details.
Writing Standards:

Session 9: Elaborating on Important Parts

Session 10: Adding Scenes from the Past and the Future

Session 11: Ending Stories

Session 12: Putting on the Final Touches

Update for 1/5/19

Dear Parents,     Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a great holiday break!  Can you believe school starts back on Monday?!  I look ...
